Preparing for the job interview

The effects of the economy may have made the job market more intimidating than ever. Significantly fewer places are hiring and businesses are cutting back by laying off employees and cutting salaries. There is still hope, however. Knowing the basics of achieving success at a job interview is the first step in attaining the job you’re after.
Preparation
Preparing beforehand helps you appear ready and knowledgeable for the position for which you’re applying. Visualize the interview from start to finish and imagine yourself behaving confidently. Think of questions employers typically ask and answer them repeatedly until you are comfortable and coherent in your answers. Try conducting a mock interview with a friend for practice.
Common questions an employer may ask are:
-Why would you like to work for this company?
-How can you add value to this position?
-Where do you see yourself in one or five years from now?
-What are your strengths?
-What are your weaknesses?
A new form of interviewing that is common is called behavioral interviewing, which consists of the interviewer describing a hypothetical situation and asking you to describe how you would respond. This shows him your thought process and how you deal with certain problem situations. Research the company beforehand and find out as much about it as possible. Knowing background information will allow you to think of ways in which you can meet the company’s needs. It may be useful to contact the company’s receptionist and request brochures or annual reports. Speak politely on the phone and when you go in person to pick up the information. Your impression on the receptionist might aid you in getting the job. Arrive to the interview 5 to 10 minutes early. If necessary, drive to the location the day before to plan how long it will take, considering traffic, construction or other possible delays.

What to Bring
Another aspect of preparation is bringing tools that will help you promote yourself and your abilities as well as inform your interviewer.
Some key items to bring are:
-Resume or job application
-Samples of previous work, especially if the field for which you’re applying includes education, graphic design, art or communications
-Social Security card
-Government issued identification, such as a driver’s license
-List of references from previous employers or co-workers
-School transcripts
-A pen and paper to take notes
Behavior
Be conscious of your behavior at all times so as not to give the interviewer the wrong impression. The interview should begin with a strong, firm handshake and make eye contact with the interviewer when doing so. Make eye contact throughout the interview to convey trust and sincerity. However, too much eye contact can make the interviewer uncomfortable. Smile and tilt your head slightly forward to show that you are attentive.
Utilize proper English and avoid the use of slang.
Do not cross your arms, tap your feet, slouch or show signs of boredom. Avoid nervous habits such as biting your nails, playing with your hair or fidgeting.
During the Interview
Know the interviewer’s name and use it, particularly when greeting him.
Focus on your skills and accomplishments, including high school and college achievements, volunteer work, co-curricular activities and computer and language skills.
In terms of a job objective, be clear about what you want and don’t want. Expressing that you are willing to take “anything” is not the best strategy.
Know your strengths and apply them to the needs of the company.
Manipulate your weaknesses into strengths appropriate for the company. For example, if the company is known to be fast-paced and unforgiving of laziness, you might say your weakness is that you are impatient and unsympathetic to people who do not fully do their jobs. In doing so, your weakness has become a strength and could be a determining factor in getting the job. If you have been fired from previous jobs, be honest about it. Avoid showing bitterness, to convey that you are mature and aware of the fact that layoffs are sometimes necessary. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of the interviewer. Some appropriate questions are:
-Who will I be closely working with?
-What are the typical responsibilities of the position?
-Is there formal training?
-Are there opportunities for advancement?
-What are the long and short-term goals of the company?
Avoid asking questions that can easily be answered by researching the company Web site. Avoid asking about salary or benefits unless a job offer has been made. End the interview confidently, thanking the interviewer for his time and ask when you might hear back from him.

Appropriate Attire
Your appearance is the first judgment an interviewer will make and dressing professionally and appropriately is crucial. Even if the company is known to be casual, dress nicely for the interview, unless instructed otherwise. For men, a two-piece matched suit is most appropriate. Wearing a suit shows the interviewer you take the job seriously and that you are promoting yourself as a professional. It should be a solid color with a white, long-sleeved shirt underneath. Dark socks with cleanly polished shoes should be worn. Avoid wearing jewelry or cologne. Hair should be neat and fingernails should be trimmed. For women, a solid colored suit or a blouse and a skirt are appropriate. The best materials for all seasons are wool, wool blends or high-quality micro fiber. Avoid acetate or rayon blends. If wearing hosiery, the color should be tan or neutral and wear conservative or moderate shoes. Avoid excessive makeup, perfume or jewelry. Hair should be neat and fingernails should be manicured. Acceptable colors for both men and women are navy, dark grey or black. Solids or subtle weave or plaid patterns are best. Overall, just make sure to exude confidence when going into an interview. If you do everything you can to make the interview a success, you have done your job and then it is up to the employer to make the final decision. Have you ever considered marriage? Long term relationships are simply the foundation for a lifetime of love

and intimacy with your partner. How do you know when the time is right?

As your progress through your relationship and you become more comfortable with your partner you may begin to question your future with him/her.Marriage and commitment may become topics in conversation as well. It’s not easy to know when is an appropriate time for a marriage proposal because it varies for everyone. Some people decide to marry within a month of meeting someone and others prefer to spend a few years dating prior to taking it to the next level.

Although there is no exact time that can ve pinpointed for marriage, studies show that individuals who wait until their thirties to marry for the first time don’t have better odds of staying with their spouses. They actually have the same risk of divorce as someone who marries in their teens. Dr. Alan Hawkins, chairman of the Utah Healthy Marriage Initiative, says that “There is some data now suggesting that ‘sweet spot,’ in terms of marrying, is really in your mid- 20s”. Research presented shows that it’s best not to marry too young and also avoid marrying for the first time past thirty.

Dr. Alan Hawkins says that in our mid twenties, “We get a better sense of who we are and what our values are,” therefore marriages have stronger foundation and last longer. People who decide to postpone marriage until after they finish college or until they are secure financially have a higher risk of divorcing opposed from those who chose to marry while still in college.

The most important aspect of marriage is not necessarily when you marry but who you marry. You should marry someone you cannot live without. This should be someone who makes you happy in their presence and sad in their absence. Your soul mate will be someone you can relate to on a physical and psychological level. When you feel as though you have found the right person you can then consider marriage.

Take in to consideration that the best time to marry may be in your mid twenties and you risk hindering your relationship with your partner by marrying to soon or waiting too long. You should also consider having a discussion about what both of you want for your future together. Marriage must be a reciprocal agreement, something both of you want. There is a significant amount of responsibility that follows proposal and commitment; you must be ready to take on those obstacles together.

Marriage is a huge milestone in life that many individuals look forward to. If you feel as though you couldn’t live another day without that person and the feeling is mutual between the both of you, marriage may definitely be something to consider. Reflect on what you would have to lose or gain by proposing to your partner at the stage you are in your relationship and discuss what both of you want. You are the ultimate marriage clock in your relationship; if you love one another then marriage may indeed be right for you.

Five types of guys to go for One of these could be your perfect guy.

Marisa Amorasak
The college years don’t often serve the most savory of men. It can be tough to pick out who’s worthwhile and who’s not. Read on for five types of guys that are worth your time:

1.) The guy from the other side. One of the upsides of entering the college dating scene is that you’ll meet people from totally different backgrounds that you didn’t have the chance to meet in your hometown. If you’re a small-town kind of girl, dating a guy from the Big Apple can be so rewarding. International students, home-schooled guys (yes, I’m serious), guys with radically different musical taste or even that guy from the stuffy exclusive neighborhood, have a unique perspective and that difference between the two of you can actually help you grow. Embrace your differences! HealthGuidance.org says that “to avoid a cross-cultural relationship because of the differences you will have then is really folly, as all these problems are still going to come up in a relationship with someone from a similar background.” There’s something electrifying about connecting with someone that’s so unlike you. The point is that guys like these are novelties, and have the potential to be gems.

2.) The guy who’s ready to commit. This guy introduces you to all of his friends and is eager to go Facebook official with you. While all of this commitment stuff might freak you out at the beginning, this guy offers something that every good relationship needs: stability. His enthusiasm for committing to you will translate to him being there to fix your door’s lock when it breaks, calling you consistently , and giving you a stable shoulder to lean on. You should be flattered by the pride he takes in showing you off and jump at the opportunity.

3.) Mr. Driven. He knows exactly what he wants out of life and he’s going for it, full-speed ahead, while his buddies sit back and watch football. Authentic ambition doesn’t fade from a person’s character so you can expect this guy to be as serious and goal-oriented about everything in his life—could it be you? If Mr. Driven wants you, you’ll know it. As an added bonus, in a few years he’ll be one of those sexy businessmen in a suit.

4.) Your BFF. So… you’ve had this guy friend for years. He’s seen you cry over countless jerks and maybe he’s seen you doing something really unattractive, like clipping your toenails. Don’t write him off! The fear of ruining the friendship might be on the forefront of your mind, but don’t let that fear keep you from someone that makes you happy. “Being friends already, you guys have spent enough time with each other to know each other’s strength and weaknesses,” says the Examiner. Think about it. You get along great, your parents love him and he knows you inside and out. Not to be cheesy, but doesn’t true love stem from a solid friendship?

5.) The boy next door. The boy next door is approachable and real. Women often overlook them because they lack the drama of the bad boys, and honestly the heartbreak as well. The boy next door is someone you’ll be able to settle down with because in the end, he wants to settle down too. Aiden from “Sex and the City” is a classic example of the boy next door who got ditched for the more dangerous Mr. Big. Don’t make the same mistake as Carrie by passing this guy up.

Five types of guys to avoid Here’s how to spot and avoid these types.

Marisa Amorasak
You’ve probably met all of these guys and maybe even made the mistake of dating one of them. Take the precautionary route and read on for how to spot and steer clear of these types.

1.) The Player. Yeah, yeah, it’s easier said than done. He’s charming and cute, so you want to believe those sweet nothings spilling out of his mouth. But don’t play dumb: If you’re finding other women’s belongings around his apartment or he has a tendency to go MIA, he probably has something to hide. Other telltale player signs include the major freak-out when you touch his phone and an impressive number of excuses for his shadiness. Players exist everywhere, but tend to fester in sloppy bars and apartments housing four or more people. Bottom line: The Player isn’t interested in relationships, so don’t be the poor girl who thinks she can change him.

2.) The Metro. Following David Beckham’s rise in popularity, Journalist Mark Simpson introduced the concept of the metrosexual man in 2002 . “[The Metro] likes to be admired… and doesn’t care whether the admiring is done by women or by men.” Let’s get this straight: There’s nothing wrong with a guy caring about his appearance. The problem with the Metro occurs when finding the perfect v-neck takes priority over you and your needs. Does he panic when he runs out of Jergens Daily Glow moisturizer? Definitely a Metro. In the long run, a high-maintenance guy will be more trouble than he’s worth. If he is a perfectionist about the way he looks, it may be indicative of his deep self-interest. The Metro can be found tossing his perfectly coiffed hair at pretentious nightclubs and you can bet he’s not sipping on a beer.

3.) Mr. Not-So-Funny. A sense of humor in a guy is a vital quality for many women, and maybe that’s what initially attracted you to him. Mr. Not-So-Funny is distinguishable from funny guys because he takes his jokes too far and doesn’t know when to stop. He may be afraid to make himself vulnerable, or maybe he’s just not that into you. Who cares? This guy hasn’t grown up yet, and it’s not anyone’s responsibility but his mother’s to wait for him.

4.) The One with All the Baggage. The older you get, the heavier the average man’s baggage becomes. But there’s a difference between the friendly phone call here and there and frequent dinners with the ex. Whether it’s an ex-wife or an ex-girlfriend, remember this: If he cares about you, he’ll drop the baggage. If he doesn’t, get out of there quickly. A guy with too much baggage is easy to spot—he constantly and casually brings up the ex when you first meet and he dwells heavily on the demise of his last relationship.

5.) The Dumb Guy. Dumb Guys are absolutely everywhere. Women fall for them because despite being mentally vacant, they have some other redeeming qualities that encourage you to try to look beyond the obviously low IQ. Maybe he has great family values or he’s really hardworking. Generally speaking, people can’t help how inherently intelligent or not they are. You don’t have to hate the Dumb Guy for being dumb, but you should leave him to a girl that’s closer to his intellect. Here’s some food for thought from the New York Daily News: Dumb guys are more likely to cheat on their significant others than smart ones.

Spice up your relationship Rekindling the passion In your love life.

Shareda Anderson
So, things are not what they used to be between you and your partner! Don’t worry this is a completely normal phase of a relationship. In reality love is not the fairy tale depicted in films and television shows. In actuality there are obstacles and several dry patches, however, a little bump in the road should not be a sign it’s time to move on, but instead it’s a sign to move forward.

The thrill of meeting someone new will always be exciting. Most people make the mistake of believing this feeling will be consistent throughout the course of the relationship. Just because the excitement begins to fade does not mean something is going wrong between the two of you or something is missing. You may simply need to spice things up and rekindle the flame you and your partner share.

According to psychologist and author, Doctor Phil, at this point in the relationship, after a few months or years, we begin to adapt habits. These habits inevitably make us take our lovers for granted and the same routine becomes boring. At this phase your love is taking a more mature shape and you are now prepared to take it to a richer experience. If you have found someone you want to spend the rest of your life with or maintain a relationship with there are a few ways to get your love life back on track.

Of course to keep things new and exciting do new and exciting activities. Switch up the routine a little bit by enjoying something neither one of you have done together before. Maybe if you have become accustomed to staying in the house renting movies, try going to the theater or to a drive in movie. Maybe choose and visit a place you have seen in one of the movies you’ve watched. Try to think of activities that you could introduce to each other and have a great time.

In addition to trying new things, another essential factor is affection. Psychologist, Jessica Langfellner, suggest that you reminisce on the elements that brought the two of you together and determine what you value most of your partner. Over the course of a serious relationship we tend to forget the steps we took to earn their love. A little appreciation and affection goes a long way. Tell your lover how you feel about them, how you felt when you first met them, and how much you care about them.

Another way to spice things up with your mate is by enhancing the romance and intimacy. Sex is something that both of you may enjoy but has also become routine. Have a personal discussion about positions or activities you would like to try with the one you love. Surprise your partner with some new lingerie or outfit; explore the depths of your partners’ kinky side. Ehow.com provides a number of romantic games that are sure to please the both of you.

Remember communication is essential in any relationship, regardless whether it’s psychological or physical. At this phase in your love life your relationship has matured to a point where you must renew the excitement. By expressing your appreciation for each other and communicating how you feel about one another, you increase the psychological aspects of your relationship. Dedicate time to try new things and create new experiences. Switch up the routine in your romance as well by discovering new ways to please each other. Learn to have fun with your partner the way you did when you first met, that is the key to moving forward in your love.

So, there’s this thing called love How we fall in love.

Shareda Anderson
Have you ever been in love? There is something magical and extraordinary about falling in love. Love is a thrilling experience that occurs between two people. Individuals seek out love for fulfillment and excitement. But studies show that chemical components may also play a role in your choice of love partner.

Professor Arthur Aron from the State University of New York at Stonybrook has studied the dynamics of what happens when people fall in love on a psychological level.

According to Professor Arthur, “Our primary motivation as human beings is to expand the self and to increase our abilities and our effectiveness. One of the ways we accomplish this is through our relationships with other people.” In essence, we seek love for fulfillment in our lives.

More than likely, we fall in love with individuals we find attractive or appealing in some way. A mutual attraction for one another creates a window of opportunity for both partners to self-expand. However, this process becomes difficult if either person does not find himself/herself attractive. In order to find love or to love someone else we must first love ourselves. Confidence and high self esteem are essential to finding your soul mate.

Although people assume they have found love at first sight, statistics show that most people fall in love with people they have known for a while. Generally, people only report falling in love rapidly about forty percent of the time. On the other hand, the rate at which people fall in love may also be dependent on culture.

Attraction is not necessarily the most important factor in the process of falling in love; it is merely foundation or an addition. Kindness and intelligence play a major roll through the progression of falling in love. These are attributes that each partner discovers over time as they become more familiar with each other. Psychological characteristics are the true indicators for a successful long-term relationship.

Psychologist Mark Kristal from the University of Buffalo explains the chemistry behind romance, “There are several types of chemistry required in romantic relationships.” There are specific elements that influence how we fall in love.

Pheromones are invisible signals that enter the brain through the olfactory system. They may function in sex, alarm, territoriality, aggression and fear. According to Kristal, we choose specific partners based on pheromones, smells and other sensory signals.

We also fall in love partially due to hormones. Oxytocin and Vasopressin are hormones that are present in couples who are in love or have maintained a long-term relationship. Dopamine is another hormone that contributes to the chemistry in romantic relationships. Sometimes people are unable to fall in love simply because their chemicals are unbalanced or do not engage.

We desire to fall in love to provide fulfillment to our lives. Through romance and relationships we gain a sense of purpose. With the help of chemical reactions and essential hormones we are capable of finding a soul mate and hopefully happiness as well.

To reach the best place to see Mount Everest (known locally as Sagarmatha), from Nepal s capital city of Kathmandu you first take a half-hour flight on a small plane to Lukla, then walk 31 miles to the small city of Namche. The trekking is by foot, up 12,000 feet over an unpaved path that’s inaccessible to motorized vehicles. Fifteen feet wide in some places, as narrow as five in others, the alternately rocky and smooth path ascends and descends, traversing narrow steel bridges over fast-flowing rivers, and a landscape of Himalayan peaks, pine forests and valleys. A vast number of faded but still lively Buddhist prayer flags hang from passing buildings.

Tourism is an important part of Nepal’s economy and Sagarmatha National Park is a popular destination, with people drawn to the roof of the world. Each year, about 25,000 tourists visit. But tourism, and the people it brings with it, creates a “population effect” in the region. An average of four service people migrate in for every tourist. This has resulted in an influx of 125,000 new people whose needs put new stresses on the ecosystem, especially the forests. An expedition to Everest can include 30 climbers and an astonishing 100 porters.

A Delicate Balance

The permanent population is small about 3,000 people reside in the national park itself and 4,000 in the buffer zone, declared in 2002. The critical buffer allows wildlife to migrate in and out and provides a livelihood for local residents, thus increasing local support for the protected national park. Thirty to 50 percent of the revenue from the park is returned to buffer-zone residents by the government to support sustainable development activities.

Not surprisingly, considerably more wood is cut during tourist season, to cook meals, heat common rooms, and provide the occasional hot shower that tourists crave after a long day of walking. Field-based conservation workers from the World Wildlife Fund have been promoting alternatives in the buffer zone and national park to reduce the toll on trees. Among them are fuel briquettes made from animal dung (which haven’t caught on at a large-scale) and more efficient “back boilers,” which when installed on stoves reduce the wood needed for cooking.

In addition, throughout the region, locals manage tree nurseries–plots of seedlings that, when tall and hardy enough, are planted to regenerate the forest. Whether the forests remain resilient in coming years is an open question, especially outside the park. The challenges of sustainable use will increase if the local population (doubled in the Himalayas since the 1950s) increases, or the number of tourists and porters swells further.

Unlike the top of Everest, the route to Namche is not covered in debris left behind by generations of trekkers. Litter is relatively rare, perhaps due to fewer tourists visiting in 2002 due to Nepal’s then-raging civil war. But tourists, and porters and residents, too, use many goods encased in plastic or metal–soda, canned food and the ever-present plastic water bottle (see “Message in a Bottle,” cover story, September/October 2003).

The park and a local nonprofit organization, the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, work to educate tourists not to litter and urge them to carry out as much of the solid waste as they bring in, especially plastic bottles. They’ve made some progress. But packaging still abounds and much more is buried or burned than recycled.

At the viewing area for Everest, a 20-minute walk above Namche, the evidence of tourists is scarce. White-blue in the cool morning air, the tallest peak in the world is luminnus, glinting as the sun rises against a clear sky.

If You Go …

Nepal is a country of greatly varied topography and weather, including the highest mountain peaks in the world, thick, humid forests and temperate plains. So, it’s best to know the climate and landscape of regions to be visited before setting out, and to pack accordingly. Layers are best, since temperatures may fall at night but be quite warm to hot in the daytime. If a trek is planned, bring appropriate gear: good walking boots, a warm, waterproof jacket, a hat and a sleeping bag. Alternatively, you can also rent trekking clothes and supplies at shops in Kathmandu.

While planning your trip, check U.S. State Department and international news services for updates on the state of Nepal’s civil conflict. Most of the skirmishes are localized, but bombs have been set off in Kathmandu so it’s a good idea to be aware of the situation before setting out

Before venturing to this little-traveled quadrant of Nepal, I was interested to update my research on Katmandu’s massage parlors and dance bars.

About four-and-a-half years ago, I gathered an extensive account of how commercial sex is sold with young Nepalese girls in Kathmandu, especially in the tourist area of Thamel.

In shelters, I heard numerous stories from young girls trafficked from rural areas into the clubs and parlors, where they were coerced to perform sex acts with tourists and locals alike.

Each dance bar has a distinctive musical theme — American pop, Bollywood, etc — and while one young girl dances on stage, others sit with men at tables trying to transact for sex. If the club is busy and a man does not transact quickly enough, a bouncer tells him to make way for someone who will.

Along with physical coercion, threats against family members ensure the trafficked girls do as they are told. Small amounts of money sent to parents by the victims also pressure some to remain in sex work as long as possible.

In the massage parlors, the situation remains largely the same. I am typically told there are actually no massages for sale. When I enquire what else might be for sale, the offer to see young girls in a back room quickly emerges.

At casual glance, there seemed to be fewer clubs and parlors operating in Thamel. Local colleagues told me that the police have started to crack down, and also demand higher bribes. This has pushed many establishments into less touristy areas in Kathmandu, which I intend to investigate when I return.

Beyond Kathmandu, the new insights I gained this week on forced labor in Nepal have been in west Terai, a flat agricultural area along the border with Uttar Pradesh in India.

Throughout this region, I met dozens of former Kamaiya. These are individuals caught in an ancient practice of generational debt bondage. Almost all Kamaiya belong to the lower-caste Tharu ethnic group, and almost all Kamaiya owners belong to the upper caste Brahmin group.

The essence of Kamaiya debt bondage is this — each year Kamaiya enter a “contract” with a landowner to work a large parcel of land. In exchange, they are given a small hut and a few hundred kilograms of rice throughout the year. They receive no money and no share in the income from their work. If they need money for anything, they must borrow it and go deeper into debt. As the debt grows, the bondage is passed from one generation to the next.

Earth has experienced climate change in the past without help from humanity. We know about past climates because of evidence left in tree rings, layers of ice in glaciers, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and layers of sedimentary rocks. For example, bubbles of air in glacial ice trap tiny samples of Earth’s atmosphere, giving scientists a history of greenhouse gases that stretches back more than 800,000 years. The chemical make-up of the ice provides clues to the average global temperature.

Using this ancient evidence, scientists have built a record of Earth’s past climates, or “paleoclimates.” The paleoclimate record combined with global models shows past ice ages as well as periods even warmer than today. But the paleoclimate record also reveals that the current climatic warming is occurring much more rapidly than past warming events.

As the Earth moved out of ice ages over the past million years, the global temperature rose a total of 4 to 7 degrees Celsius over about 5,000 years. In the past century alone, the temperature has climbed 0.7 degrees Celsius, roughly ten times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming.

Models predict that Earth will warm between 2 and 6 degrees Celsius in the next century. When global warming has happened at various times in the past two million years, it has taken the planet about 5,000 years to warm 5 degrees. The predicted rate of warming for the next century is at least 20 times faster. This rate of change is extremely unusual.

Global warming has been discussed over and over again. In recent months even politicians like Al Gore have gotten involved. He created a documentary called, “An Inconvenient Truth”, to try and push for more action as well as to enlighten the public. His view is that there are solid facts that global warming exists and skeptic scientists don’t. Many people believe that global warming does not exist because they are not being affected directly; however, scientists believe that the increase in natural disasters comes from global warming.

In NY, I hear a few people here and there saying, “you call this global warming” just because the temperature is at 10 degrees even though this winter it only snowed once compared to the past. Have you ever seen the painting of George Washington sailing across the Delaware River? If you have, you know there is ice in that water. Now if you look at that river during the time of year that picture was taken, there is no ice. What about in the summer when you feel the heat of the sun and realize it is a little hotter now then a few years ago? That could all be in your mind due to media hype and all, but how can you tell?

Where does all this global warming stem from anyway? Who or what is the cause of all this debate and discussion? Some People are afraid and they want answers to their questions. The following is the list of the top 10 causes of global warming. With all the facts laid out, one can make a better decision about what global warming is and how it might affect them.

1. Carbon Dioxide From power Plants

One of the largest contributors to global warming is said to be pollution from power plants. Every time you turn on a light, you add to the tons of carbon spewed into the sky by long tubes connected to these massive coal or oil driven “machines”. According to recent studies, approximately 40% of all carbon dioxide emissions come from power plants. Natural gas, coal, and oil are the 3 types of polluting power plants. Coal is the biggest contributor out of the 3 because of it releases more carbon than the rest of them per capita. Studies, like the one done in the film, “An Inconvenient Truth”, show that the levels of carbon in the atmosphere has increased drastically in recent years and will probably continue to increase in the years to come.

Some skeptics believe that the levels of carbon are completely normal. According to Geocraft.com, the levels of carbon found in the atmosphere today mirror those found hundreds of thousands of years ago. They believe the scientific “proof” that global warming exists is taken out of cortexes because they look at the past 100 years instead of the bigger picture. The earth has been around of billions of years; earthquakes, monsoons, ice ages, meteors, and so forth, have all affected the earth without destroying every living thing on it.

Despite what others say, many people have created solutions for the pollution caused by power plants. For example, products that help to reduce the green house emissions have emerged. Filters that improve the quality of the air released into the atmosphere have been created to solve this problem. In addition, government regulations have been placed to force owners of large industrial buildings to improve the quality of the air produced by their buildings. Finally, hydrogen power has also become a way of reducing carbon. According to Tom Simonite using carbon is better than using water to generate power, and it is completely environmentally friendly.

2. Pollution Emitted from Cars

Driving to work in the morning is one example of this. When you’re stuck in traffic, how long does your car stay idle on the road, releasing its pollution into the air? There are approximately, 3 billion vehicles being used today. Similarly with the power plants, cars also emit carbon into the air. Cars emit millions of tons of pollutants into the air. In some dense cities, this causes some of the smog and ozone problems. 1,500 cases of cancer are reported each year from pollution according to www.nsc.org.

Luckily, solutions are available. Many ask, “What can I do.” One thing that can be done is a switch to more environmentally friendly vehicles such as hybrid or electric cars. Some countries are even using cars that run on hydrogen. In the near future, talk about ethanol to replace gasoline in cars seems to be a promising change.

3. Pollution from Trucks

Trucks, although less in volume, make up for a large portion of the earth’s pollution with each truck’s individual output of pollutants. The difference between cars and trucks is the type of fuel used to run them. Diesel, the standard for trucks and other vehicles used for carrying large loads, is known to be less clean than gasoline. Trucks roaring down streets can be seen from a mile away with a tiny smoke stack blowing out the product of having to carry large amounts of goods from one place to the other.

How can our society get rid of trucks? They are vital for the economic health of certain companies. They are used to build homes and carry supplies, People go camping and carry gear with them, and the list goes on. According ucsusa.org, diesel is reaching a point where it can no longer meet the standards of government regulations. What kind of alternative can be used instead?

4. Pollution from Airplanes

Airplanes are indispensable to today’s society. Businessmen fly across the country on a daily basis to meet the demand of industry. In less than 24 hours, you can fly across the circumference of the planet traveling from the US to China. So how can you possibly blame these amazing gravity defying machines of global warming? 10% of the green house gas emissions come from airplanes. You might be going to a vacation or to a business meeting but those airplanes you travel on are releasing their pollution directly into the air they fly in.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, during the 3 days after 9/11, there was a difference of 4°F in the average highs and lows compared to other days. What caused this change? It is believed that the contrails of the air crafts are the cause of this. Following 9/11, all airplanes were grounded. This allowed scientists to see the difference in the temperatures with contrails in the sky and without them. Although airplanes do pollute the sky, they accidentally reflect some sunlight.

5. Pollution from Buildings

Although many believe those large SUV’s and Airplanes are the cause for all the commotion going on about global warming, the houses we live in may be a larger contributor. Unlike cars and airplanes, homes have a long lifespan of 50- 100 years meaning that changes in this area may be difficult to accomplish. Houses are mainly built to burn oil, or run on coal. In most houses, coal is used for electricity because it is the cheapest and most abundant resource.

To assist with this problem, architects will have to start using materials that can reduce the consumption of fuels by making them better ventilated or better at holding in heat. Government regulators must pass laws forcing contractors to follow stricter guidelines when building homes to reduce energy consumption. Finally, individuals can reduce the amount of frivolous energy they use on a daily basis.

6. Methane Stored in Water and Ice

With the increase in temperature, a fear of methane being released into the air arises. Methane is approximately 60 times stronger than carbon dioxide as a green house gas. According to scientists, in the past, a rapid release of methane has led to immense heating of the earth. In the past, when the earth’s temperature rose to a certain level, such as 8 degrees above normal, the earth’s temperature then increased an additional 14 degrees.

Methane is stored in the earth’s oceans and is released when the temperature increases and pressure reduces. Also, methane can be found in ice. When ice melts, methane stored in the ice is released. Scientists fear that if the earth reaches a certain temperature, it would be impossible to turn back and prevent a massive increase in temperature.

Today, photography is characterized by a rapid growth in the development of technology and ideas. Each year, millions of pictures are taken and an astonishing array of new films, cameras and imaging systems enter the market. One of the great attractions of the photography field is the ease with which basic skills can be learned.

Unlike some of the older arts that take years of training to produce an acceptable product, anyone can quickly learn how to take a picture; however, photographic techniques must be mastered before you can become an accomplished photographer; therefore, mastery of the basic fundamentals is the foundation upon which you will build your photographic and professional skills as a Navy Photographer’s Mate. The photographic techniques presented in this chapter are essential in producing quality photographs, and you can apply each of these fundamentals, to some extent, each time you take a picture.

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPOSITION

Photographic composition is the pleasing arrangement of subject matter elements within thepicture area. Creative photography depends foremost on the photographer’s ability to see as the camera sees because a photograph does not reproduce a scene quite the way we see it. The camera sees and records only a small isolated part of the larger scene, reduces it to only two dimensions, frames it, and freezes it. It does not discriminate as we do. When we look at a scene we selectively see only the important elements and more or less ignore the rest. A camera, on the other hand, sees all the details within the field of view. This is the reason some of our pictures are often disappointing. Backgrounds may be cluttered with objects we do not remember, our subjects are smaller in the frame or less striking than we recall, or the entire scene may lack significance and life.

Good pictures are seldom created by chance. To make the most of any subject, you must understand the basic principles of composition. The way you arrange the elements of a scene within a picture, catch the viewer’s attention, please the eye, or make a clear statement are all qualities of good composition. By developing photographic composition skills, you can produce photographs that suggest movement, life, depth, shape, and form, recreating the impact of the original scene.

How are photographic composition skills developed? You look, you study, you practice. Every time you take a picture, look all around within the viewfinder. Consider the way each element will be recorded and how it relates to the overall composition. You must become thoroughly familiar with the camera and learn how the operation of each control alters the image. Experiment with the camera and look at the results carefully to see if they meet your expectations. With experience and knowledge of your equipment, you begin to “think through your camera” so you are free to concentrate on composition. Devote serious study to the principles of good composition. Study books and magazine articles on composition. You should analyze various media: motion pictures, TV, magazines, books and newspapers, and evaluate what you see. What is good about this picture or that TV image? What is bad about it? What principles of good composition could you apply in a different way to make the picture better.

Good or correct composition is impossible to define precisely. There are no hard-and-fast rules to follow that ensure good composition in every photograph. There are only the principles and elements that provide a means of achieving pleasing composition when applied properly. Some of these principles and elements are as follows:

•

Center of interest

•

Lighting

•

Subject placement

•

Texture

•

Simplicity

•

Tone

•

Viewpoint and camera angle

•

Contrast

•

Balance

•

Framing

•

Shapes and lines

•

Foreground

•

Pattern

•

Background

•

Volume

•

Perspective

As you study these principles of composition, you should soon come to a realization that some are very similar and overlap one another a great deal.

Because all or most of these principles must be considered and applied each time you take a picture, it may all seem quite confusing at first. With experience you can develop a sense of composition, and your consideration and application of the principles will become almost second nature. This is not to suggest that you can allow yourself to become complacent or careless in the application of the principles of composition. Doing so will be immediately obvious because the results you produce will be snapshots, not professional photographs.

The principles of composition that follow apply equally to both still and motion media photography.
